Synopsis

Queen of the night

Queen of the night

Contemporary Drama

premiere: 28 september 2024

Teatrul Dramatic Fani Tardini Galați

The director’s intention

I wanted to write The Queen of the night with my childhood home in mind, and the performers suggested stories and writings that evoked the feel of the traditional village where they were raised. In this performance, we critique the country reality when tradition isn’t always the best course of action and celebrate it by reenacting some love stories. An enjoyable and tearful show that was worked on with enthusiasm. Whether the viewer was raised in the countryside or not, we offer both.

Synopsis

Peony

Peony

Contemporary Drama

Opening: 3 september 2023

Fani Tardini Dramatic Theatre, Galați

The director’s intention

I wanted to introduce Galati to the idea of sex education. Although I expected it would be challenging, Peony turned out to be a gentle comedy on the forbidden topic of where we explore around sexuality and sex. I think this performance would be an excellent chance to talk about important topics if the audience came with the intention of understanding a bit more than we already know. It is not a show that casts blame or engages in arguments with viewers. I wasn’t planning on doing that, in any case.

Synopsis

During a parent-teacher meeting, professor Peony suggests that the fourth-grade curriculum incorporate optional sex education. This is a chance to discuss the benefits and drawbacks of sex education in schools while also honoring the early sex education teachings of previous generations.

Synopsis

Untamed shrew

Untamed shrew

Popular Theater

Opening: 8 March 2023

„Lucian Blaga” National Theatre Cluj-Napoca, The Great Hall

Intenția regizoarei

Shakespeare’s framing of theater in theater in the original play served as my source of inspiration. The original prologue shows Caterina and Petruccio’s story being told to a non-theatrical audience, one that is capable of responding to what they see in a “untamed,” raw manner. Due to this framework, the play could be rewritten in a variety of ways that would address distinct facets of the same narrative. In this way, hopefully, I can contribute something fresh to this play that isn’t centered around a didactic presentation.  Two distinct performances of “the taming of the Shrew” are presented to the audience in an attempt to address the question: is this “taming” a ritual of seduction or a means of impressing the woman? Alternatively, is it bringing a wild spirit back to its traditional roles? I haven’t yet discovered a compelling response. Not because I’m unable to make up my mind. However I’m resolved to investigate and consolidate the various kinds of lectures that are available worldwide.  As a director, I find the process fascinating because the outcome might be something other than an explosion of ideas.I think it’s best to let people argue freely and consider who needs to be tamed and by whom. Is it the female? The individual? Or the general public? Perhaps the director? Ultimately, my shrew remains untamed.

Sinopsis

Many of us associate “the taming of the shrew” with the tumultuous romance of Petruccio and Caterina, the well-known Shakespeare couple. Due to her easily agitated nature and foul mouth, Catrina is a woman that few attempt to woo. In an attempt to gain status and wealth, Petruccio chooses to court Catrina. Petruccio is a man that chases money and status and decides to court Catrina. As the play goes on, their dynamic gradually shifts, and in the ideal scenario, they become a loving couple. But is a 1600s tale of love between a man and a woman still relevant in 2023? In an effort to address this question, Shakespeare’s play becomes a forum for discussion between genders, between traditional and modern theater, and between conservative and progressive ideologies. Beginning with the play’s original rewrite by Maria Manolescu, director Leta Popescu creates a personal atmosphere that illustrates the idea of theater in theater as well as the complex relationship between men and women. The performance is intended for a wider audience and is a part of Leta Popescu’s popular theater directing project.

Reviews

„Rejecting a pretense and a militant approach, Leta Popescu brings all these visions together in a single popular theater production. By placing them at the intersection of these viewpoints, demands, and realities, she ultimately asks herself, “and now, where to theater?””

Oana Stoica – Scena9.ro – What I have seen at FNT (I)

„Leta Popescu demonstrates through her humorous take on the untamed shrew what is at stake in the conflict between the generations, what lies between the inconsistencies of the old and the new, what lies between traditional and modern mentalities, and what is at stake in the current era that we are all doing our best to control, to tame.”

People you don'tlove anymore

Oameni pe care nu-i mai iubești

teatru popular

premieră: 24 decembrie 2022

Teatrul Clasic Ioan Slavici Arad

F_ _ _ _

premiere: 24th September 2022

/SAC @ Malmaison, Bucharest

The director’s intention

I don’t believe fear can be found in a conventional space (gallery, theater); people know they are in a secure environment. That’s how we started to construct spaces that resemble and make us think about fear. Let’s undertake this rational exercise on the subject, where we experience and embrace the slight discomfort that combines humor and strangeness.

Synopsis

A performative installation about one of the most enigmatic emotions—a primal and universal feeling or raw emotion that rules the present sociopolitical climate.

Cronici

“We begin entering this space, a space that cannot be measured; it is probably generous because it doesn’t feel crowded, surrounded by white smoke, semi-opaque. We exist merely in this smoke for a while, then the lights dim down, and everything feels heavier and heavier.”

Alberto Păduraru – LiterNet – F _ _ _ _: flip it, fuck(ery) (butter)fly, pheasant fagot fear

From one side to the other we are invited to explore this space by the performers, by the sounds, noises, and shouts that surround us, and lastly, by our overwhelming curiosity. Or maybe fear? Say, what does the performance title resemble to you: F_ _ _ _,, performative installation? If I inform you that the artists are naked in the majority of the scenes in this performance of 35–40 minutes, then the association with the f-word doesn’t seem to be far from winning the bets. And yet, the F word and the vacant spaces may as well be about FEAR.”

Mihai Brezeanu – LiterNet – The F wor(l)d – F_ _ _ _// performative installation

F_ _ _ _,, performative installation, created by Leta Popescu and her team from /SAC, Malmaison, is about fear and personal courage, about shame and confidence. A performance that spins you around in a gloomy and drowning maze forcing you to think about your fears. I got home quite troubled, a little excited, and a bit scared.

The Sparrow

The Sparrow

popular theatre

premiere: 31st July 2022

Fani Tardini Drama Theatre, Galați

The director’s intention

The SPARROW show is part of a bigger directing project in which I try to make theater more popular and to reach larger audiences. I want to look at what’s popular in the current theater and how I can contribute without abandoning my own artistic subjects and projects that I want to work on (not so popular, of course). I wrote The Sparrow with a lot of nostalgia (a very popular feeling), like a protest for my own uprisings (a popular feeling), where I used fiction to insert the comedic relief, honesty and rawness in terms of directing. The performance has two main points that contradict each other: vulnerability and force. And from there comes the show’s atmosphere, which could either hurt/bring pain or bring pleasure to the audience.

Synopsis

The show focuses on the main character’s journey through life, starting from childhood until adulthood, where we get to know the life of a girl who lives in an industrial town in post-communist Romania. The four acts (childhood, adolescence, being a young adult, and adulthood) are all connected by the memories that start to come back when the main character, Ema (what an ugly name), goes on a walk on the Danube Cliff, after being away for more than 10 years from her hometown. The show is about the childhood as well as the adolescence of an entire generation that reflects on their own personal struggles in the macro context of the struggles brought by the transition.

Dual

DUAL

a performance about friendship
devised theatre

premiere: 31st July 2022

Teatrelli, București

The director’s intention

DUAL is an opportunity to see friendship beyond the cliched lenses and, at the same time, the performance represents a form of forever searching for the means of artistic expression. The starting point and inspiration behind the performance were conceptual artists such as Erwin Wurn and Csilla Klenyánszki, but with an added humour twist – that analyses the everyday aspects of human sculptures with fragile balance.

Synopsis

“DUAL, a performance about friendship” finds itself at the intersection of dance-theater, non-verbal theater, and object theater, with a purpose story of artists looking for something: three best friends meet to make a desert together. What seems like a normal and natural evening starts to accelerate with tension that leads to inner questions. The artists start to represent and transpose the opposite of their friendship with the help of different objects from the kitchen. What happens when trust is no longer available? Doubt starts to erode. What happens when trust disappears? Fear is born. ”
